If there’s one thing I hope people take away from this
episode, it’s this: never ever doubt Marlowe. Personally I’d been
looking forward to this episode. I love watching Castle and Beckett face
challenges and overcome them, especially now that they’re a couple.
It’s easy to live in a happy bubble, it’s not so easy to have your
relationship actually tested, certainly not like this. I’ll be honest, I
stayed off Tumblr for the most part lately, simply because it was sort
of exhausting to read all the speculation about Castle cheating, Kate
deeming him capable of murder etc..
The thing we all have to remember is this: no matter how
much we think we love Castle & Beckett, it’s pretty obvious that no
one loves them more than Marlowe. He would never have Castle cheat on
Beckett, and he’d never have Beckett think Castle would be capable of
murder. He would never do any lasting damage to this couple. No, I don’t
know the man personally. I don’t have to, because it’s all there in his
writing. Our ship is rock solid and always will be.
Now let’s dive in:
Rick received the support he fully deserved from not only
Kate, but the whole team. I liked how they handled it. They all believed
he didn’t do it, but they still did their jobs. Castle has earned this
trust from all of them and I’m glad that this episode not only lived up
to my expectations in this aspect, but exceeded them.
Penny tweeted that the theme of this episode was “Stand by
your man”. And Kate did that beautifully even when a mountain of
evidence pointing against Castle was being thrown at her.
The scene between Kate and Lanie was my favorite for many
reasons. One, I love when the girls interact because it’s so rare. Two, I
love how open and raw Kate allows herself to be around Lanie. She’s her
best friend and between best friends, you don’t hold back. Otherwise
they’re not your best friend. Three, that scene contained my favorite
line of the entire episode:

KATE: You should’ve seen him, Lanie. He looked like a little boy, he was so scared.

That line did me in. First of all, kudos to Stana who just
knocked that scene out of the ballpark. Second of all, Kate sounded
both devastated and protective when she said it. That’s when I knew she
didn’t believe he cheated. She sounded more upset about the fact that
her boyfriend was scared than the fact that it seemed like he cheated on
her. And also, that description just fits Rick so well in a way. I
mean, we’ve seen him all manly plenty of times, but no matter what he
does, Nathan just brings an innocence to the role that really does make
Castle seem like a little boy at times. And I mean that in the best
possible way. Kate doesn’t think he’s perfect - far from it. He puts his
foot in his mouth and he doesn’t always act appropriately, but that
doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. He has a good heart and that’s all she
needs to know, that’s what she trusts.

KATE: She’s feeding you just enough truths so that swallowing the lies will be easier!
— 4x05, “Eye of the beholder”

The emails were a genius move on Tyson’s part for exactly
that reason. No one, as far as Kate was concerned, knew about her
relationship with Castle. And here’s an alleged email where Castle tells
a girl they have to keep their affair a secret cause he’s “seeing
someone”. If Tyson had guessed this and been wrong about Castle being in
a relationship, those emails wouldn’t have been very believable. I
think at first, they were pretty overwhelming for Kate, hence the tears,
but as she talked to Lanie you could tell that it didn’t make any sense
to her. He’s just not that person. Such a beautiful scene.
The scene where she handcuffed him was amazing as well.
Any scene that has a shout-out to the Pilot is brilliant. In the Pilot,
Kate says, “Oh there’s no need to be gentle” when the uniforms cuff him.
In this scene she puts the cuffs on him as gently as possible. I don’t
know if this was intentional, but it was beautiful either way.
All the scenes in the cell were beautiful, in fact. My favorite
Caskett moment was when Rick told her about Tyson. He knows it sounds
like he’s making it up, like he’s trying to save his butt. And her
response is that it’s the first time any of this has made sense to her.
And he didn’t take this for granted. In his mind she had every right to
doubt him, which is kinda heartbreaking. That’s why I’m glad that Kate
stood by him 150%. She’s an amazing partner just like he is. I don’t
think anyone has ever believed in Rick this much without question, just
because they could. Aside from his family of course.
Other thoughts:
- Michael Mosley is by far the creepiest villain this show has ever had.
I watched the ep at 1AM and I actually kept looking behind me cause I
was so paranoid all of a sudden. He’s just so good and I’m glad that the
possibility of him returning is still there. Speaking of which, I’m
definitely on board with Castle’s theory. No way Tyson is dead.
- I love Gates. Sure, Penny makes it easy to like her, but I genuinely
love Gates. She cares abut the team and she wants to be part of it,
because she respects everyone in it. Even Castle. She’s amazing.
- The fact that Tyson watched Caskett make love is so sick and creepy. If Kate finds out she’ll want him dead. Yikes!
- Special shoutout to Nathan, who always rocks any material he’s given. I
love that they mostly keep things light for Rick, cause he’s just not a
dark character and deals with things quietly, BUT I certainly won’t
complain if we’ll get to see a bit of drama in Rick’s life, too. I
appreciate that Marlowe won’t tackle the dad-storyline before he’s 100%
happy with it. I trust him to do it justice when the time comes.
- If you needed a reason to vote for our two leads at the People’s
Choice Awards, you’ve got it now. Vote. They both deserve it for
bringing us so much joy.
This was the best episode since ‘Knockout’, IMO. Yes, even better than
‘Always’. I’m super impressed with this season so far. Kudos to everyone
involved and thank you for keeping the quality of the show as high as
ever.
